Lupita Murillo, who specializes in crime reporting, has been working in journalism for over 40 years and has been a part of the KVOA News 4 team since 1978. The first Latina reporter in southern Texas graduated from the University of Texas-Pan American with a degree in mass communications. Murillo, a witness to more executions than any other reporter in Arizona, has won numerous awards and accolades for her reporting, including an Edward R. Murrow Award and Associated Press honors. Murillo discusses overcoming the struggles of being the first female in broadcast journalism back when it was mostly a “man’s world.” She tells stories about some of the local high-profile crimes she has reported on, some of which have been featured on TV shows such as “Dateline” and “Forensic Files.” Murillo also discusses dangerous situations she has encountered, such as being shot at near the U.S.-Mexico border. Murillo discusses the evolution of news from the early days of broadcasting through the introduction of social media. She offers advice on skills that future journalists need to succeed.
